Fiddler on the Roof Tickets- Topol Joins This Years Tour By: Julie Cudney
For fans who have been waiting to get Fiddler on the Roof tickets, it doesn’t get any better than now. The reason is that Chaim Topol is returning to a role he made famous: that of the family’s patriarch, Tevya. Topol became famous for the role when appeared in the 1971 film version of the musical, earning him a nomination for Best Actor at the 1972 Academy Awards. He did win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Tevya. The appearance came after Topol had already gained acclaim in the role in the London production of the show. At the time of his rise to fame, Topol was barely old enough to play the role of a man with numerous grown daughters. He has also played the role in the 1991 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. The revival itself won a Tony for Best Revival.

Topol was born in 1935 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Before his film role in Fiddler on the Roof, Topol had already appeared in a variety of films like El Dorado, Sallah Shabiti, A Talent for Loving, Before Winter Comes, Cast a Giant Shadow and Ervinka. His post-Fiddler Movie appearances include Galileo, The House on Garibaldi Street, Flash Gordon and For Your Eyes Only. Along with acting, Topol has also moved into producing. He produced Kol Mamzer Melech and Shehuna Shelanu, Ha-. As of late, he also again took the role of Tevya in the Australian production. Fans can reserve their spot to his show at http://StubHub.com.

Fiddler on the Roof follows the story of Tevya, a Jewish milkman, who is trying to make a life for himself and his family in Russia during the early 1900s. In Tevya’s mind, everyone in his culture should follow its traditions, which include proper avenues to go about everything from praying to marrying. A twist is thrown into Tevya’s plans for his daughters as he tries to start marrying them off through the matchmaker. The girls have different ideas about what love should look like, much to the chagrin of their father. At the same time, the Jewish village is dealing with the distinct possibility of a revolution as well as face oppression. Through it all, Tevya does his best to keep his family functioning.

The show has been part of the world musical culture since the 1960s and continues to stay relevant even today. The book was written by Joseph Stein but was based on the stories of writer Sholom Aleichem. The music is by Jerry Bock with the lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Bock and Harnick have written together before and since, creating shows like Fiorello!, The Body Beautiful, Tenderloin, The Apple Tree and The Rothschilds. There most famous show, of course, was the creation of Fiddler on the Roof.
