Falling asleep transports us to a magical land, where everything is possible. During REM sleep we are capable of anything, flying, soaring through the oceans or living a life of luxury
We talk to famous people, we start wars and win battles as our body recharges and revives itself for the day ahead. Insomniacs do not go through this restful and relaxing cycle, so they may not be able to get much dreaming done, or they wake up too early.
They may not remember having had them at all.
To be fair, many people who do not have any type of sleep disorders do not remember dreaming, once they wake up, although it is very likely that they did. To remember or not to remember the dream is not really the issue, the important thing is the rejuvenating effect that sleep brings.
When we first fall asleep, we are in a mellow and relaxed zone, the drowsy part of sleep that is unfortunately very easy to disrupt. As the sleep cycles get deeper and deeper it becomes more and more difficult to wake us up.
Being awakened during the deeper cycles of sleep or coming out of them too soon is what leads to the feeling of sluggishness and tiredness through the day.
An important level of sleep comes with REM sleep, or rapid eye movement sleep, which is when the subconscious mind kicks on and gives us our dreams.
Making sure that you get to sleep in the first place is the only way to ensure that you get to REM sleep: no-one but you can be in charge of your sleep destiny.
Tell your body who is boss and make sure that the boss is you. Do not panic if you cannot sleep. Set the stage for good sleep and you will accomplish your goal.
Start by clearing the set:
Remove anything that might relate to work, stress or bother you in any way. If you are angry with your mother for some reason, take her picture out of the room for the night! Now you are focusing on your need to get some sleep.
Your bedroom should be dark and cool. Sleep experts, and Feng Shui practitioners in particular, detest the idea of having lots of electronics in the bedroom, especially TV sets.
If you want to find a natural cure for insomnia you will move the one eyed monster out of your bedroom!
The same goes for your laptop computer.
Put it on sleep mode, shut it down, or take it out of the room.
Next, run through the scene.
During the lead-up to going to bed, try to move slowly, turn the lights down, avoid noise and "jumping about".
Picture yourself waking in the morning, relaxed, refreshed and renewed. When you do get into bed, close your eyes and start thinking about pleasant, restful thoughts, perhaps setting the scene for the dreams you are about to have.
If you notice yourself thinking about things other than sleep, redirect and refocus your mind back to the task at hand.
You are the director; now make sure that you dream an epic dream, while you finally get the restful sleep you have been after. |
