Core strength is fundamental in any sport that involves balancing. Surfing of course is all about balance. You need to stick fast to that board no matter what twists, turns and manoeuvres you are performing! A strong core not only provides you with excellent balancing skills but importantly it also increases your stamina and reduces your risk of injury
If you want to boost your surfing skills, you need to get out there and practice, practice, practice but you also need a workout on dry land too. Surfing requires a lot of core strength because your body needs to be extremely centered. Arm and leg strength are important, but the ability to put it all together and to make sure that your body acts in total concert together is essential. This is where actual core training is going to help you put in the right place. When you work on your core muscles, you will find that you can add more power to your performance and that you are going to be able to enjoy the activity that you love for longer stretches of time and with less fatigue affecting you.
What does core training really do? by focusing on the muscles of the hips, lower back and abdominals you are increasing both your stability and strength. Think of the way that you move on your surf board and of all the movements that you need to stay on balance and upright. The rotations and twists that you put your body through can play an important part in how you manoeuvre on your board and it can also put you at risk for a lot of nasty injuries. Core training really does help to minimize your chances of gaining an injury.
By working on your core strength you are simultaneously working on and improving upon your balance. Your balance is integral to your performance and in many cases, balance is all about control. Core work allows to get more control over your body and to make sure that you are going to be able to move how you need to, when you need to. Take a moment to consider what your options are going to be and how you are going to be able to get the results that you need.
Surfing is a sport like no other and it makes sense that you are going to need a core strength training regime that stands out as well. Crunches and sit ups are nice, but you can bet that they are not going to help you in the long run. The great news is there are a few quality programs out there that are designed specifically for surfers! |
