Galapagos Tour Top Tips

By: Terry Philips
Expect the unexpected they say, and when planning a vacation never has this rang truer. Whilst this is a good point, there are always some things that you can do to ensure that your experience is the best it could possibly be. Here are a few things to consider when heading on a Machu Picchu and Galapagos tour that can help to make your vacation go as smoothly as possible. Using an operator with years of experience as well as knowing exactly what you want to do and see is crucial.

Galapagos Islands

Although the islands are part of the country of Ecuador, they are located about 965 km from the mainland and, therefore, will require a flight from either Guayaquil or Quito to get there. The Galapagos are a pay to enter national park and if you have booked a cruise it is important to know whether or not the price of entry is included.

Most people do see the islands via cruise and, if you choose to do this, you will need at least five days but are better off with one around eight days in length. This will allow you to see the most islands and what they each have to offer, which is the benefit of taking this type of tour.

Bear in mind that visiting the Galapagos Islands is not a bargain destination. Considering that you are going to be spending a lot of money on this trip regardless, you don't want to be messing around on a budget cruise. Instead, go for the best Galapagos Islands cruise that you can reasonably afford. The boat is going to be like your hotel for the duration of your time on the water. If you are in cramped and uncomfortable quarters, it is going to affect your enjoyment of the entire experience. For a nicer journey, a smoother one for those of us with sea legs, have a look at the 100 passenger carrying luxury yachts.

To save a bit of money, you can travel during low season when the flights are a bit lower and you may be able to get some discounts on tours as well. For flights, low season is between May 1st and June 14th and then again between Sept 15 and Oct 31.

Even if you are on an all-inclusive tour, be sure to bring some U.S. dollars with you ATMs are not readily available and only on Santa Cruz. You may want to shop or buy snacks on land and alcoholic beverages on board are typically an extra.

As far as packing goes, also be sure to bring extra memory cards and batteries or battery packs for your camera. This is a destination where you will probably take even more photos than you thought. It may seem to go without saying but also be sure to bring along such things as sunscreen and any medications you may need. Whether or not you can find what you want is a lottery but they will cost more on the islands.
