Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. Sony Xperia Z2

By: Bobby Buys
In the world of smartphones, two of the biggest producers must be Samsung and Sony. In 2014 these megastars will hope to conquer the marketplace with their respective flagship models, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2.

Let's see how the two offerings stack up against each other!

Physically, both smartphones are similar in size; although the Sony Xperia is marginally larger and slightly heavier (by 20 grams), the differences are not really noticeable. The Sony is able to accommodate a 5.2-inch screen, while the Samsung offers a 5.1-inch screen and both models have full HD. Sony uses an IPS LCD touchscreen, while Samsung has opted for the super AMOLED technology.

The cases both feel comfortable in the hand, with the Xperia having a solid feel with the aluminium and glass construction, while the Galaxy has a more 'plastic' feel, enhanced by the simulated perforations on the cover. Both are classified as dust and waterproof, but the removable rear cover on the Galaxy could allow water entry if it's not securely in place.

Both smartphones are Android based, delivered with Android 4.4.2, but of course each manufacturer overlays this with their own user interface. The processor in each model is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU, although Samsung has clocked the Galaxy processor at 2.5 GHz, compared with the Sony at 2.3 GHz.

The Sony Xperia Z2 comes with 3GB RAM compared with the Samsung Galaxy S5's 2GB, but while both smartphones come with 16GB of storage capacity, which can be expanded by the use of a microSD card, the Samsung scores higher as it can accept cards up to 128GB, whereas the Sony has a maximum of 64GB.

The front facing cameras on both smartphones are similar, the Galaxy is 2.1-megapixels and the Xperia is 2.2-megapixels, but the main camera specifications give the Xperia the advantage with 20.7-megapixels, compared to the Galaxy at 16-megapixels. While the Xperia may give better results, the Galaxy seems more fun to use.

The Galaxy has a 2800 mAh removable battery, while the Xperia comes with a fixed 3200 mAh battery. Despite this, talk time on the Sony is only 15 hours, compared with 21 hours on the Samsung, although the larger battery on the Sony allows for a longer stand-by time.

If you're into gimmicks, then the Samsung Galaxy could persuade you with a fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor, while the Sony Xperia offers stereo speakers.

So, both smartphones offer similar performances. It's really a matter of personal choice, although the buzz around the Internet and social networking appears to favour the Sony Xperia very slightly. Which one will you choose?
