What is Krav Maga

Recently, a number of fitness studios have popped up around the Salt Lake Valley promising results from Krav Maga. But what is Krav Maga?

Directly translated, Krav Maga means contact combat. In essence, Krav Maga is a martial arts form that originated in Israel. Initially, Krav Maga was created to train the Israeli military in both offensive and self-defensive moves. The techniques have been adopted from a variety of disciplines including: boxing, wrestling, gymnastics and military training.

Although originally only taught to soldiers, Krav Maga techniques have been modified and adapted for everyday use. In studios across the United States, Krav Maga techniques are helping real people understand self defense basics, which can be used against would-be attackers. The underlying concept of Krav Maga is simple: attack the most vulnerable points on your opponent to quickly put an end to the combat. Vulnerable targets include, but are not limited to, eyes, throat, face, solar plexus and groin. Krav Maga students seek to engage in the most efficient combat possible, and do so by honing natural defense moves. Krav Maga instructors also teach specific moves to ward off multiple attackers or defend against an attack involving weapons such as sticks, guns, or knives.

Although Krav Maga is being packaged in the United States for fitness purposes, it is much more than that. Krav Maga is not first and foremost a fitness program. Its purpose is to equip students with the skills they need to survive and thrive in an urban attack. However, during Krav Maga training, students can expect to become more fit and lean because the fighting techniques require building physical strength and stamina. In addition to building physical strength, Krav Maga students enhance their mental strength by learning to make good decisions in stressful situations. This is primarily accomplished by teaching students to understand their physical surroundings, and quickly and accurately assess the level of danger present. Because of the multi-disciplinary approach, Krav Maga can be a rewarding and challenging workout option.

Krav Maga has evolved over time, and there are many different schools of instruction out there on the market. Some are old school and have only slightly departed from the original techniques brought to civilians in the 1970s. Some schools have opted to be a bit more flexible, and have tailored programs to meet the needs of their clientele, which may be largely women or children as opposed to men. As with anything, people interested in the pursuit of Krav Maga training should research the schools, the instructors and the techniques that work best for them individually.
